Just a thirty-minute drive from Palma, lies the picturesque mountain village of Alaró. Wander through its peaceful cobbled street and admire the beautiful surroundings. Despite its location and growing popularity, Alaró has managed to maintain its traditional character and resist the pull of mass tourism. This has helped preserve its charming small alleys, beautiful stone buildings, and authentic atmosphere. Beyond its welcoming cafés and cobbled streets, Alaró also has a rich history as a former center for the Mallorcan shoe manufacturing industry.

Today, Alaró is a popular spot for hikers and cyclists, thanks to the easy access to the Tramuntana mountains. It’s the ideal starting point for anyone eager to explore the outstanding mountain range, whether you’re an experienced adventurer or just beginning.  

South of Alaró lies Santa Maria del Camí, or simply Santa Maria, as the locals call it. Positioned on the route from Palma to Alcúdia, this welcoming town is another place definitely worth exploring.

Santa Maria is best known for its lively Sunday market, which welcomes both locals and tourists week after week. The town also has a rich wine tradition, with numerous vineyards and wineries that produce some of Mallorca’s finest wines. Santa Maria is also celebrated for its art scene, offering a chance to discover a different side of this charming town. 

Located just south of Alaró and on the outskirts of Santa Maria, the small village of Consell is believed to have once served as a temporary camp for Roman soldiers on their journey northward. Today, Consell´s main draw is its vibrant Sunday flea market, where you can find everything from vintage clothes and jewelry to vinyl records and antique Mallorquin furniture. Don´t miss the old factory building at the market’s end, filled with a mix of newly produced and antique pieces – it’s the perfect spot for any Mallorcan homeowner looking to add a unique touch to their space!

On the way to Castell d’Alaró, you’ll find Es Verger, a very old traditonal restaurant celebrated for its lamb dish. This rustic spot, that is loved by both locals and tourists, offers traditional cuisine in an authentic setting. You can drive there, but be ready for a thrilling drive on narrow roads with stunning views.  Alternatively, many visitors choose the popular hike from the town center, which takes about 90 minutes and provides a more relaxed way to enjoy the journey. For those who want to continue hiking, it’s a 50-minute walk from the restaurant to the castle, where you’ll be enchanted by the historic allure and breathtaking views along the path.

The Alaró market, held every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the town center, is the perfect activity for a morning out. Although the market is smaller and less crowded than other markets, it stands out in its own unique way. Wander through the various local vendors offering fresh fruits, vegetables, cold cuts, and handmade crafts. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by one of the food stands for a bite. Be sure not to miss Famosa Samosa, a fantastic food stop serving delicious Indian food, or Cruz Coffee, a popular mobile street café offering high-quality coffee!
