This August something will happen in Mallorca that has not happened since 1905. On August 12, a total solar eclipse will be visible from the island, a spectacular event that you definitely do not want to miss!
Restaurants, bars and hotels are already almost fully booked for the big evening, but there are still plenty of amazing places where you can experience the eclipse. Here are the best places to watch it.
The eclipse begins at around 7.30 pm and totality starts at 8.31 pm. The total eclipse will last for about 90 seconds. Since the sun will be only about two degrees above the horizon, it is essential to choose a location with a completely clear view of the sea, as even a small hill, cliff or tree can block your view.
A total solar eclipse is one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. As the moon passes directly in front of the sun, daylight turns into twilight. The temperature often drops by a few degrees, birds fall silent and the sky takes on an almost surreal appearance.

One of Mallorca’s most famous viewpoints. From here you have a clear view of the sea and a perfect position to watch the sunset. It is expected to be very busy, so arriving early is highly recommended.
Sa Foradada
Sa Foradada is already one of the island’s most popular places to watch the sunset and during the eclipse it will probably be even more sought after.
Deià
This charming mountain village is a great choice if you want to combine the experience with dinner or a stroll through one of Mallorca’s most beautiful villages. Choose one of the viewpoints or head down towards the coast for a clear view of the horizon.
Banyalbufar and Estellencs
Along the coastal road between Banyalbufar and Estellencs you will find several smaller viewpoints where you can park and enjoy the eclipse. Many of these spots are much quieter than the island’s most famous attractions.
Port de Sóller
A great option if you would like restaurants, cafés and a seaside promenade nearby. The harbour offers beautiful views, although some areas may have a partially blocked horizon because of the surrounding mountains.
Can you see the eclipse from Palma?
Yes, but the experience will not be as impressive. From Palma, the mountains block part of the horizon, meaning the low sun may disappear before totality has finished. Check out the location in Palma that you have in mind a day before, to see where the sun is at 20.31. The further north or northwest you can travel, the better your chances of seeing the full event.
Arrive early
This is expected to be one of the busiest evenings Mallorca has seen in many years. Traffic towards the Tramuntana mountains and Cap de Formentor is likely to be very heavy throughout the afternoon.Plan to leave much earlier than you think you need to. Bring plenty of water, something to eat, a blanket or a chair and turn the evening into a picnic while you wait for the sun to set.
